The latest issue of MovieMaker magazine ranked the 25 best cities for filmmakers. Memphis came in at #8, an improvement over last year when we had dropped from #7 to #10. Cities were ranked according to cost of living, average salary, unemployment rate, job growth, median home price, and crime rate. They also factored in the number of film schools, festivals, film-related vendors, movie venues, production scene, unique efforts, and financial incentives. Memphis is right behind Stamford, Connecticut (the location for Revolutionary Road and Rachel Getting Married), and ahead of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Public Enemies). Many people are pleased about our rankings and will proudly proclaim “Memphis is on the move!”, while I can only sit back and say, “I’m not so sure.”
